The primary role for this candidate will be to develop and maintain the packaging and shipping solutions for our Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Program. The individual will report through the Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE) Department but will work support multiple disciplines within the program.
In this role the engineer will design and develop product crates, skids, hardware and material to ensure that effective and robust end to end transport is achieved while aligning to Contractual and Federal packaging requirements and regulations. In addition to packaging design, the candidate will be responsible to author, release Packaging Data Sheets (PDS) which dictate specialized packaging instructions to ensure the safety of the equipment. The candidate will also support the LM FBM Logistics team and Customer facilities as required in alignment of the sustainability scope of the FBM program.
The engineer will have the opportunity to work with Suppliers, FBM Hardware Engineers and External Customers to develop & improve technical packaging designs to support shipping of program hardware.
The engineer will also have the opportunity to collaborate with LM Space packaging personnel and keep up-to-date on related packaging industry best practices and technological advancements. In addition, the engineer will have the opportunity to identify efficiencies and drive process and communication improvements to advance the FBM program in alignment with the Digital Transformation Initiatives.
Travel may be requested to support vendor visits, Customer facility visits or training.
The candidate may be called on to support tasks outside of Packaging Design/PDS as required for FBM MGSE program success.

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field or equivalent experience/combined education with 1+ years of experience.
- Knowledge/Experience with CREO or similar CAD tool
- This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- The ability to research related packaging issues and identify solutions is required.
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply Program, Government and industry standards.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
- Candidate must have the ability to work in an environment with evolving requirements and dynamic schedules.
Desired Skills
- Prior experience with Hazardous Material Training 49CFR, IATA, IMDG would be a plus.
- Background or working knowledge of Packaging Engineering practices.
- The ability to become certified in all processes and procedures applicable to packaging and shipping is required.
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $70500.00 - $130900.00

- For (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
