Standard Job Description
Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 114,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) is one of four Lockheed Martin business areas. MFC is a recognized designer, developer and manufacturer of precision engagement aerospace and defense systems for the U.S. and allied militaries. MFC develops, manufactures and supports advanced products for military customers that include the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, NASA and dozens of foreign allies. MFC also offers a wide range of products and services for the global civil nuclear power industry and the military’s green power initiatives.
As a Software Engineer at MFC, you will join one of the largest networks of software professionals, implementing cutting edge technologies on both existing and new development platforms. You will be helping us solve the world’s most difficult challenges supporting such wide-ranging domain areas such as aircraft flight command and control, air traffic control, health care, and homeland defense. We are a matrix engineering and technology organization so you will touch multiple programs over your career!
What You Will Be Doing
The Embedded Software Engineer will develop and integrate software capabilities supporting a System Integration Lab (SIL) used for incremental subsystem and system level integration and testing. This role will bridge performance software, embedded systems, subsystem hardware, and lab test infrastructure.
The engineer will adapt software developed by performance and subsystem teams for the SIL/test-bed environment and develop software tools, GUIs, subsystem emulators, and test capabilities that enable standalone, incremental, and system level testing.
This position will work closely with electrical, RF, systems, test, and software engineers and will contribute to the definition of the SIL software architecture, interfaces, and development practices.
Core Responsibilities:
- Adapt, integrate, and maintain embedded software developed by performance and subsystem teams for operation within the SIL/test-bed environment.
- Develop and maintain embedded C/C++ software supporting subsystem and system-level integration.
- Develop software interfaces between subsystem hardware and SIL test infrastructure.
- Support hardware/software bring-up, integration, troubleshooting, and debugging.
- Develop subsystem emulators/simulators to enable incremental testing when target hardware is unavailable or isolated testing is required.
- Develop graphic user interfaces (GUIs) for controlling, configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting SIL hardware and subsystems.
- Develop software for command, telemetry, configuration, logging, monitoring, and data collection.
- Develop automated test capabilities to improve test repeatability and reduce manual test execution.
- Contribute to the definition and implementation of SIL software architecture, interfaces.
- Develop unit, integration, and system-level tests for software and interfaces.
- Participate in system integration activities, technical reviews, and test execution.
- Collaborate with engineers to identify and resolve integration issues.
- Document software interfaces, design decisions, operating procedures, and troubleshooting methods.
- Apply software development best practices including source control, code reviews, testing, documentation, and configuration management.
This position is onsite in Grand Prairie, Tx.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, Systems Engineering, or related STEM field.
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience developing embedded software using C and/or C++.
- Experience developing software that interfaces directly with hardware.
- Experience troubleshooting and debugging hardware/software integration issues.
- Experience with software interfaces and communication protocols.
- Active Secret Security Clearance
Desired Skills
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in an environment with evolving requirements and interfaces.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Systems-level thinking with the ability to understand how software, hardware, and subsystem interfaces interact.
- Strong embedded C/C++ programming and debugging skills.
- Experience with serial and network communications, including RS-422/RS-485, Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, SPI, I²C, CAN, or similar interfaces.
- Ability to translate system and integration requirements into practical software solutions.
- Ability to understand and modify existing software to support new environments or requirements.
- Ability to develop maintainable, reusable software rather than one-off test utilities.
- Ability to determine appropriate levels of fidelity when developing subsystem emulators and simulations.
- Strong hardware/software troubleshooting skills.
- Comfortable working directly with hardware, test equipment, and laboratory infrastructure.
- Comfortable operating in an early-stage development environment where architectures, requirements, and interfaces may evolve.
- Strong cross-functional communication and collaboration skills.
- Self-directed and proactive in identifying technical risks, dependencies, and integration issues.
- Ability to take ownership of a software capability from concept and architecture through implementation, integration, and test.
- Experience interfacing with laboratory instrumentation and test equipment.
- Experience with command and telemetry systems, data logging, configuration management, or data acquisition.
- Experience with Git or similar version-control systems.
- Experience working with complex systems containing multiple interacting subsystems.
