Job Description:

About the role

We are looking for a Senior FPGA Engineer with experience in VHDL (or Verilog) to join our growing team at our Gloucester site. This exciting opportunity allows you to work on a variety of Defence, Cyber, and Intelligence programmes, contributing to the design, development, and deployment of cutting-edge RF systems. If you have hands-on experience with HDL development – especially in the context of software defined radio applications – and are eager to advance your career in a high-impact, innovative environment, we want to hear from you!

At Lockheed Martin, we value work-life balance, providing flexible work schedules and hybrid work options where possible. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package to help you lead a fulfilling and healthy life inside and outside of work. This role offers opportunities for continuous professional development, allowing you to grow your skills while contributing to mission-critical projects.

As an FPGA Engineer you will work within a multi-skilled team, using the OpenCPI framework to build, test, and optimize software-defined radio systems and RF applications. You’ll work closely with peers, Delivery Managers and Technical Leads to ensure that the customer mission requirements are achieved in efficient and innovative ways.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Component and Worker Development – Undertake the development and integration of DSP and SDR functions in VHDL which will be incorporated into a wider OpenCPI application.
  • System Design & Integration – Operate within a cross-functional team designing and integrating RF communication systems, ensuring seamless operation within complex mission environments.
  • Test & Measurement – Engage in test driven development strategies and consider testing throughout the development lifecycle of an application, implementing test harnesses and simulations for effective system verification and validation.
  • Software Optimization – Optimize the performance of OpenCPI-based systems, ensuring maximum efficiency and reliability on an exciting variety of hardware platforms.
  • Innovation – Embrace the use of the latest AI/ML tooling and hybrid cloud compute environments to deliver results that continually outpace and challenge the status quo.
  • Collaboration & Reporting – Use Agile principles and strong communication to work with peers and leaders to ensure that our delivery is providing the right solution on time.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative solutions for both Lockheed Martin and our customers, delivering cutting-edge technology in the realm of RF communications and SDR systems.

If you are passionate about FPGA development and want to leverage your expertise to contribute to innovative defence and cyber projects, we encourage you to apply. Join Lockheed Martin and help us shape the future of software-defined communication systems.

Security clearance

This role requires you to be able to obtain and maintain eDV security clearance.

You don’t need to hold eDV clearance when you apply. If you don’t currently have it, we’ll support you through the application process.

Apply now and become a developer within our team to deliver impactful, innovative solutions that will shape the future of RF Cyber.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

It is expected that you can evidence prior experience and an ability to continue to grow in one of the following:

  • Using VHDL to implement efficient solutions on resource constrained embedded devices
  • Working with RF communications and software-defined radio technologies & architectures
  • Working knowledge of digital signal processing, algorithm or payload development, and embedded system design
  • Competent in VHDL (or Verilog) for embedded applications

Desired Skills

  • EW or SIGINT capability development (including RF waveform and protocol vulnerability analysis)
  • Familiarity with GnuRadio, MatLab, AMD EDF or other SDR development tools
  • Commercial and Military communications stacks and modem development
(e.g IEEE 802.x, COFDM, Satcoms, or Link 16)
  • Working in AWS and CICD pipelined environments, especially with GitLab and Linux
