The Work
This position is for a System Safety Engineer to support the Mission Electronics Subsystem (MES) Program at our Manassas, Virginia facility. This Safety Engineer will have a primary focus on mission system Command and Control Integration (C2I). This Safety Engineer will support the lead MES Safety Engineer in conducting the System Safety Program to address the integrated system’s safety position throughout the development, verification and validation. 

This Safety Engineer will actively participate in the MES System Safety Working Group and will lead regular communication with engineering representatives across industry partners. This Safety Engineer must be highly proactive and capable of implementing a strategy for integrated software safety. This Safety Engineer must be able to evaluate analyses from distributed partner teams, identify integrated safety risk, and determine where additional risk mitigation is required. 


The primary responsibilities include:
- Leading the C2I software safety efforts, with a focus on ensuring safety features and controls for mitigation/elimination of hazards are in place across subsystem boundaries 
- Evaluating risk assessment and mitigation across mission systems interfaces, reviewing safety mishaps and hazards, reporting on risk assessment and mitigation at C2I reviews
- Ensuring mission systems safety requirements are in place and tracking those requirements through verification
- Completing System Safety hazard analyses and documenting results for delivery

Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. 

Basic Qualifications

- Experience with MIL-STD-882 based Safety programs
- Experience in System-of-Systems evaluation and assessing multi-component integrated systems
- Communication experience with partner organizations and with customer representatives, delivering appropriate messages and working through issue resolution
- Experience with Systems Engineering and Safety processes in all phases of the development lifecycle

- Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice. 
- Qualified candidate must be able to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance. This requires US Citizenship.

 

Desired Skills

- Involvement in detailed software and hardware design/development programs
- Experience supporting customer working groups and presenting at program reviews
- Experience with requirements management spanning definition, decomposition, and verification
- Experience with an Agile development environment
- US Navy Undersea Warfare experience, including sonar and sensors
- Experience with system diagrams and modeling, including CAMEO/Magic Draw

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $95900.00 - $178100.00

  • For (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
