Job Description

Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. Be part of a team delivering the next generation of secure military communications satellites for the UK Ministry of Defence. This work provides resilient, high-performance connectivity for the UK, its allies and Defence personnel worldwide, playing a critical role in protecting national security as space becomes more contested and demand for secure data continues to grow.

Joining Lockheed Martin also means helping to shape significant investment in the North East space sector, with more than £100 million proposed to support high-skill jobs, advanced manufacturing and long-term economic growth. Opportunities include potential satellite manufacturing in County Durham and collaboration with NESST – the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre at Northumbria University – helping to build a strong pipeline of talent, learning and innovation.

This is your chance to work on mission-critical technology, develop cutting-edge skills and build a meaningful career, while delivering lasting impact for the region and the nation.

Role and Responsibilities

A rare opportunity to work on some of the industry’s most advanced and mission-critical technologies, developing resilient systems designed to operate in the most demanding environments. As a Nuclear Hardening Engineer, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex engineering challenges while contributing to technologies that support defence, aerospace, and national security programmes.

You will perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk analysis, and supportability assessments across the full system lifecycle, including concept, design, fabrication, testing, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal. The role involves translating customer and operational requirements into integrated system solutions that balance technical performance, schedule, and cost constraints through functional analysis, trade studies, requirements allocation, interface definition, and timeline analysis.

Complexity

Develop innovative solutions to highly complex engineering challenges involving emerging technologies, survivability requirements, and unique system constraints. Working with a high degree of autonomy, you will lead technical activities, contribute to long-term programme objectives, and collaborate closely with senior engineers, customers, and technical authorities.

Impact

Your work will directly influence the delivery of advanced engineering solutions supporting critical national capabilities. You may lead technical projects or workstreams, contribute to major engineering decisions, and develop into a recognised technical authority representing the organisation on high-profile programmes.

Knowledge

Apply advanced engineering principles and specialist expertise to develop innovative, next-generation solutions. The role offers the opportunity to strengthen technical leadership capability, collaborate with industry experts, mentor others, and contribute to the growth of specialist engineering capability across the organisation.

Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Extensive relevant engineering experience, supported by a post-secondary qualification or specialist training in a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the nuclear/radiation hardening of electronic equipment is essential.
  • Strong understanding of resilient electronic system design for operation in demanding or mission-critical environments.
