The Opportunity

Applicants must be Australian citizens and be eligible to obtain and maintain an active Australian Government Defence security clearance at the level required for the position.

Join AIR6500, the RAAF’s $3 billion program delivering a fully networked joint air battle management system that will transform situational awareness, synchronise air and missile defence, and accelerate decision-making across joint and coalition environments.

As a ILS technical illustrator, you’ll play a key role in delivering and evolving multimedia and graphics products that support both Technical Publications and Training Development across the AIR6500 program.

Working in an agile environment alongside Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) leads, project teams, engineering personnel and customers, you’ll coordinate the development, maintenance and revision of ILS multimedia artefacts supporting both mission and support systems. These products may include technical illustrations, graphics, images, video, animations, interactive media and other visual content designed to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively.

You’ll provide specialist advice and guidance on multimedia and graphics design activities, helping ensure that visual and multimedia content is accurate, accessible, engaging and fit for purpose. You’ll also contribute to the integration of multimedia into Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETPs), training products and computer-based learning environments.

This is an opportunity to apply your advanced technical illustration and multimedia expertise to a strategically important defence capability while building your experience across complex systems, technical publications, training development and integrated logistics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of graphics and multimedia for Technical Publication and Training Development products, responding to evolving customer requirements in an agile environment.
  • Coordinate the development, maintenance, update and revision of ILS multimedia artefacts across mission and support systems, including technical illustrations, graphics, images, video and animations.
  • Apply advanced technical illustration and multimedia skills to create clear, accurate and user-focused content for Technical Publications, IETMs, training products and computer-based learning environments.
  • Design, produce and integrate computer-generated graphics, images, video, text and animations to communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, schematics and other technical source material, working with engineers, SMEs, technical authors and training developers to validate and translate information into accurate visual products.
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance to ILS leads, project staff and customers on multimedia design, technical illustration and visual communication activities.
  • Apply configuration and change management principles throughout the multimedia and graphics lifecycle, ensuring products remain accurate, current, consistent and fit for purpose.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of multimedia, graphics and ILS processes, tools and products. Experience working within an S1000D ecosystem or structured Technical Publication environment is highly regarded.

What You’ll Bring

  • Advanced technical illustration skills within a structured Technical Publication authoring environment.
  • Familiarity with DEF (AUST) 5629C, DEF (AUST) 5630 and the S1000D specification, with practical experience supporting Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).
  • Experience designing, producing and integrating computer-generated graphics, images, video, text and animations for courseware and computer-based training products.
  • Knowledge of ILS Technical Publication and/or Training environment, with an understanding of relevant processes, procedures and the overall engineering product lifecycle.
  • Experience working within engineering and/or maintenance environments, preferably within the defence industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex technical information and transform it into accurate, clear and user-focused graphics and multimedia.
  • Awareness of configuration and change management principles and their application to technical publications, training and multimedia artefacts.
  • Ability to condense complex concepts into succinct, accessible and effective visual explanations.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, technical specialists, training developers, ILS leads and customers.
  • Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to multimedia, graphics, technical communication and the development of products relevant to this position.
