The Opportunity

Eligibility: Applicants must be Australian citizens and be eligible to obtain and maintain an active Australian Government Defence security clearance at the level required for the position.

Take your career to new heights with Lockheed Martin Australia as a System Safety Engineer on the AIR6500 T2B FADS program, a next-generation defence capability that will transform Australia’s air and missile defence.

AIR6500 is the RAAF’s $3 billion program to develop a joint air battle management system that builds on the capabilities offered by Next Generation sensor and command and control systems. AIR6500 will create a fully networked ‘system of systems’ that synchronises air and missile defence operations in joint and coalition environments, maximising situational awareness and enhancing the speed of decision making across the battlespace.

We are seeking a Safety Engineer with a Systems Engineering and System Safety focus to join the AIR6500 T2B FADS program. In this role, you will apply system safety engineering within a systems engineering environment, ensuring hazards are identified, analysed, and controlled across complex and safety‑critical capabilities throughout the full system lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

Working under the guidance of the System Safety Lead, you will:

  • Perform system safety engineering activities across the program lifecycle
  • Conduct hazard analysis and safety risk assessments, including FMEA, FTA, and hazard log management, in accordance with MIL‑STD‑882E
  • Develop and maintain system safety documentation to support certification, customer acceptance, and test readiness
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of safety cases and assurance artefacts
  • Review system designs, support equipment, and operational concepts to ensure safety requirements are defined, traceable, and verifiable
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering, ILS, HSI, Software, Cyber, and Design teams to integrate safety across the system
  • Support incident and accident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Contribute to technical planning, estimation, and continuous improvement initiatives

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role, you will have:

    • Experience in System Safety or Safety Engineering within Defence, Aerospace, or another safety‑critical environment
    • Hands-on experience performing hazard analysis, safety risk assessments, and safety documentation
    • Strong understanding of the Systems Engineering lifecycle
    • Working knowledge of MIL‑STD‑882E and its application
    • Ability to assess complex technical risks and communicate safety outcomes clearly
    • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams
    • Eligibility for, or ability to obtain, an Australian NV‑1 security clearance
    • Proficient in AI prompting as it applies to this position and practice
