Job Description
Job Title:  Electro-Optical Eng Sr Stf -SP Active EO, EO Modeler
Posting Start Date:  10/9/26

Standard Job Description

Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 114,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration, and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products, and services. Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) is one of four Lockheed Martin business areas.

We are seeking to hire
an Electro-Optical (EO) Engineer focused on modeling and simulation who is passionate about EO technologies and can apply physics-based analysis to develop optimized solutions for complex challenges. The ideal candidate will have experience developing and applying radiometric, phenomenological, system-performance, and/or engagement-level EO models for sensors, laser systems, and related defense applications.

The EO Engineer must understand the sensitivities associated with the various elements of the EO system chain and be able to lead modeling and simulation activities that support system design trades, requirements analysis, performance prediction, and test planning. The engineer will be expected to assess model assumptions, quantify uncertainty, validate predictions against laboratory or field data, and clearly communicate the implications of analytical results.

Although this is a technical contributor role, the EO Engineer will be expected to provide technical leadership for modeling efforts, establish sound modeling approaches, mentor less-experienced engineers, and influence system-level design decisions. The engineer must be able to communicate complex analytical results at the appropriate level to a diverse audience, including technical experts, customers, program leadership, and senior management. Understanding of modern U.S. defense systems, specifically those focused on EO/IR and laser systems, is a plus.

Basic Qualifications

Candidate must demonstrate the ability to perform the following Electro-Optical Engineering assignments:

  • Demonstrate substantial experience developing, adapting, and applying physics-based EO models for sensors, laser systems, atmospheric propagation, targets, backgrounds, or end-to-end system performance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of radiometry, EO phenomenology, sensor performance analysis, and modeling and simulation techniques.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use MATLAB to develop and execute EO performance simulations and target models, including creating reusable analysis tools and evaluating model assumptions and limitations.
  • Conduct parametric, sensitivity, and uncertainty studies to support EO sensor and system development, including identifying key performance drivers, risks, and margins.
  • Translate system and subsystem requirements into traceable modeling assumptions, inputs, performance metrics, and analytical methods.
  • Develop, document, maintain, and review EO models and simulations throughout the development lifecycle, including model verification, validation, configuration management, and correlation to laboratory, tower, or field-test data.
  • Apply modeling results to system design trades, architecture decisions, requirements analysis, performance predictions, and test planning.
  • Lead modeling and analysis efforts for technically challenging or loosely defined problems, communicate results and limitations to technical and nontechnical audiences, and make recommendations with limited direction.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to engineers performing EO modeling and analysis.
  • Must be a US Citizen as an Interim Clearance is required to start.

Desired Skills

  • Experience developing and applying EO/IR performance models, including radiometry, atmospheric propagation, target and background phenomenology, laser irradiance, detector performance, and signal-to-noise analysis.
  • Experience using MODTRAN6 or comparable atmospheric-propagation and EO modeling tools.
  • Experience performing EO/IR system trades, performance analysis, requirements traceability, and end-to-end link budgets, including connecting subsystem performance to system-level and mission-level outcomes.
  • Experience with model verification, validation, calibration, uncertainty analysis, and correlation to laboratory, tower, or field-test data.
  • Experience modeling threat signatures, targets, backgrounds, or engagement scenarios using GFI, measured data, or modeled parameters, with an understanding of data quality and model fidelity.
  • Experience integrating EO models with pointing and tracking systems, line-of-sight accuracy models, algorithm performance budgets, digital engineering environments, or requirements frameworks.
  • Experience developing automated analysis workflows, data-processing tools, or software in Python, C++, or similar languages.
  • Experience with laser-system characterization, including pulse energy, divergence, beam profiles, TPM measurement, and test-data analysis.
  • Ability to lead modeling efforts, establish modeling practices, mentor engineers, and communicate analytical results to customers, technical teams, and program leadership.
  • Working knowledge of modern U.S. defense systems, particularly EO/IR sensors, laser systems, sensing and tracking systems, or directed-energy applications.
  • Current TS/SCI
