Standard Job Description

Software Engineer Sr

Who We Are

At Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems (RMS), we turn bold ideas into mission-critical capabilities for those who protect our nation. Our Owego team is pioneering a new era of collaborative autonomy by developing Group 1 and 2 uncrewed aircraft that launch from, operate alongside, and team with crewed platforms.

This is an opportunity to help define a capability from the ground up, take it from the lab to the flight line, and see your work perform in the real world. We are looking for hungry, smart, and enthusiastic engineers who are excited to work on cutting-edge, tangible products in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. If you are ready to shape the future of autonomous teaming and deliver technology that truly takes flight, join us.

What We’re Doing

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our team in Owego, New York, supporting the Launched Effects Family of Systems (LE FoS). You will play a key role in implementing technical solutions, developing mission-system software, defining software and hardware interfaces, supporting verification activities, and contributing to system checkout.

This role focuses on creating software solutions for complex, collaborative-autonomy-enabled small UAS applications, including Group 1 and 2 UAV development and airborne launch operations. You will work closely with systems, hardware, and integration and test engineers to develop reliable software that operates on real mission systems and supports flight-ready capabilities.

The Work

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will develop mission-system software and simulation infrastructure to support capability-based testing. You will also support system checkout, troubleshoot defects, and drive issues to closure. Your work will help make collaborative autonomy and autonomous teaming capabilities reliable, testable, and ready for operational use.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and test embedded C/C++ mission-system software for small UAS and launch systems.
  • Develop device drivers and interfaces for ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, RS-422, and Ethernet.
  • Build and extend simulation and software-in-the-loop infrastructure for capability-based testing.
  • Support laboratory and system checkout, troubleshoot defects, and drive them to closure.
  • Maintain requirements traceability and follow safety-critical development processes.

Please Note

  • This role is based in Owego, New York.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD government security clearance at the Secret level.

Who You Are

You are a results-driven, mid-career software engineering professional who enjoys solving difficult problems at the intersection of software, hardware, and flight. You write embedded C/C++ that communicates with real hardware, and you enjoy the moment when a capability works on the bench and then performs in flight.

You are comfortable with a scope, a serial console, and Wireshark. You take requirements traceability, code quality, and disciplined development seriously, while remaining curious, collaborative, and willing to investigate problems wherever they lead. You thrive in a fast-paced environment where innovative software solutions become tangible mission capabilities.

Why Join Us

At Lockheed Martin, you’ll work on meaningful programs that make a real-world impact while building a career with long-term growth and stability. You’ll develop software for emerging autonomous systems, work alongside talented engineers, and see your code move from development and simulation into integrated systems and flight demonstrations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, software engineering, computer science, or an equivalent STEM computing field with five years of related professional experience, or three or more years of related experience with a related master’s degree.
  • Six or more years of related experience with an associate degree in a STEM-related field.
  • Two or more years of experience developing C/C++ code for embedded systems.
  • Experience developing and debugging software that interfaces with hardware.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen; this position will require a DoD government security clearance at the Secret level.

Desired Skills

  • Experience working with communication protocols such as ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, and RS-422 serial.
  • Experience writing device drivers and reusable or product-line software.
  • Ability to take software requirements and implement them to create safety-critical device drivers while maintaining traceability and process compliance.
  • Familiarity with open-architecture initiatives and modular design standards, such as FACE, OMS, and SOSA.
  • Familiarity with safety-critical software development processes, such as DO-178C.
  • Hands-on experience working in laboratory environments with test instrumentation, including Wireshark and serial consoles.
  • Experience developing test plans and procedures for software verification.
  • Experience with Git/GitLab, SonarQube, or Atlassian products.
