Standard Job Description

What We're Doing

At Lockheed Martin – Rotary and Mission Systems (RMS) in Owego, NY, we proudly support Naval Helicopter programs that are essential to maritime security and mission readiness. Our teams design and deliver advanced mission systems, avionics, and secure technologies that provide unmatched performance and resilience for the U.S. Navy and allied forces. By integrating cutting-edge capabilities, we ensure our naval aviation platforms remain reliable, effective, and ready.

The Work

We are seeking an exceptional Software Engineer Sr Stf to serve as the chief software technical authority and strategic lead for software solutions supporting mission-critical, safety-critical aerospace and defense programs.

In this senior technical role, you will define the architectural vision, establish engineering best practices across multiple programs, guide cross-functional technical teams, and directly influence future product roadmaps and customer technology strategies. You will act as the primary technical interface between software engineering, program leadership, chief engineers, and defense stakeholders.

This role is onsite in Owego, NY.

Who We Are

The Naval Helo Mission Systems team in Owego brings together engineers and technical professionals who solve complex challenges for critical naval aviation programs. Our work spans mission systems, avionics, integration, and program execution giving you the opportunity to contribute to technology that matters.

Who You Are

An architectural and techincal authority that:

Has served as the designated software technical authority across major programs, establishing architectural frameworks, interface standards, and open architecture strategies (e.g., SOSA, FACE, OMS) that scale across product lines. Has supported design and code review, as appropriate.

Has provided strategic technical direction to lead engineers and multi-disciplinary software teams across the entire lifecycle -from concept formulation through deployment and sustainment. Has led software teams to ensure consistency and maximize commonality of software across programs.

Has partnered with Program Managers and Chief Engineers to establish software development plans (SDPs), drive technical, cost, and schedule accountability, and govern earned value execution (EVMS/BOEs) across major development contracts. Has coordinated with the leads for the program subsystems to ensure software elements meet subsystem requirements and to ensure common software elements are developed in a flexible and adaptable manner.

Has championed and upheld the highest standards for safety-critical and high-reliability systems (e.g., DO-178C DAL A/B, MIL-STD-882), chairing architecture boards, review gates (SRR, PDR, CDR), and software qualification efforts.

Has served as the escalation lead for systemic, high-consequence technical issues spanning software, real-time operating systems, firmware, custom silicon, and complex hardware interfaces. Has reviewed component design information and resolved design conflicts. Has identified software risk areas and provided plans to mitigate those risks.

Has mentored and cultivated the next generation of software leads and architects; spearheading modern software engineering practices, toolchains, automated verification paradigms, and digital engineering transformations across the organization. Has experience providing direction and assistance to software engineers making complex design decisions.
